parterre

The parterre, located behind the house, is a series of formal planting beds and brick walkways, with two central water features. Hedges divide two very different areas.

A “parterre” is a formal ornamental flower garden whose beds and paths form a pattern.In one is a formal rose garden and a star-shaped, Moorish fountain dating from the estate’s early owners. The fountain and surrounding brickwork have been restored and a recirculation system added.

The other area of the Parterre boasts whimsical pebble mosaics, commissioned by Madame Walska, designed by Jim Minah and installed by stonemason Oswald Da Ros in 1969. A statue of Neptune, also restored, is a focal point.

Madame Walska’s rose garden, in the upper parterre, is now filled with floribunda roses, walking iris (Neomarica caerulea), and turf.
